Should your email validator be that complex?

Bartosz Olchówka in Programming, on November 01, 2014

So you’re a keen programmer that one day faces a problem of validating user’s email address. Sounds easy.

You search Google for the best possible regular expression. After a while you end up with the following RFC-compliant best regexp ever:

;/(?:(?:\r\n)?[ \t])*(?:(?:(?:[^()<>@,;:\\".\[\] \000-\031]+(?:(?:(?:\r\n)?[ \t])+|\Z|(?=[\["()<>@,;:\\".\[\]]))|"(?:[^\"\r\\]|\\.|(?:(?:\r\n)?[ \t]))*"(?:(?:\r\n)?[ \t])*)(?:\.(?:(?:\r\n)?[ It doesn’t sound like a good solution for validating your user’s email, though. It’s just uncomfortable to work with this expression inside the app. The code editor will wrap it into 50 lines. For a programmer who wants to keep the source code clean, there should be a better approach.

How about a more humane regular expression? At LiveChat, we’ve been using the following one for a long time:

///^
([\w\!\#$\%\&\'\*\+\-\/\=\?\^\`{\|\}\~]+\.)*
[\w\!\#$\%\&\'\*\+\-\/\=\?\^\`{\|\}\~]+
@
((((([a-z0-9]{1}[a-z0-9\-]{0,62}[a-z0-9]{1})|[a-z0-9])\.)+[a-z]{2,6})|(\d{1,3}\.){3}\d{1,3}(\:\d{1,5})?)$
///i

It used to work pretty well until one of our customers reported a bug with adding new user account. His email address was: info@(…).attorney and it just didn’t go through our email validator.

I believe the author of the email expression forgot about the top-level domains list that is constantly changing. (By the way, did you know that the longest top-level domain name is a 14-characters-long “.CANCERRESEARCH”?)

There are probably more traps in the email validation rules. And when I thought deeper about the best possible solution, I came to the following conclusion.

We don’t really need complex email regular expressions.

In the pursuit of the best-written email regular expression, we often forget what’s the goal of the validation process. It’s just helping the user catch misprints in his email address so that he receives the account confirmation link.

So why not just make sure the user entered the @ sign followed by the domain name? Do we need to validate anything more?

This is why we’ve decided to change our complex email regexp into a more liberal one:

;/^[A-Z0-9._%+-]+@[A-Z0-9.-]+\.[A-Z]{2,15}$/i

If the user mistakes the login name for email, this expression will notify about the problem. It will also work fine if he forgets to enter the ending “.com” domain part.

Do we really need to validate anything more?
